Anyone visiting Bali’s Bukit peninsula for the first time will be struck by the rugged beauty of the land. The rugged limestone cliffs that overlook many of the beaches and the ocean beyond provides a spectacular view of fishing boats, surfers, white sandy beaches and water that goes from bright blue, to turquoise, to incredible shades of greens. With perfect blue skies and amazing sunsets the Western tip of the Peninsula is a vista of awe inspiring sights that dazzle the eye.
However, once one gets used to all the spectacular beauty of the views of this peninsula and looks a little deeper they will see that there is a lot more to discover about this rugged area than just breathtaking landscapes. The the cliff top Hindu temple of Uluwatu is a popular tourist stop and worth taking an afternoon to see. Walking up the path to the temple one is greeted by a breathtaking view. The temple itself is an interesting mixture of religion and what some tourists refer to as pure highway robbery at the hands of what many believe to be trained monkeys that inhabit the temple grounds. These monkeys will grab anything and then tourists are required to pay a fee (called a tip) to one of the temple workers to bribe the monkeys into giving the items back. While some find the monkeys amusing and the antics of the temple workers ingenious others find the whole thing annoying. So unless, you are set to enjoy the fun it is best to leave your possessions safely locked in your car to avoid the thievery.
While the temple is interesting and somewhat fun, those hoping to explore the natural areas of the peninsula find exploring the prehistoric sea caves exciting and much more enchanting. Since many of these caves can only be gotten to by narrow paths leading down to some of the beaches a motorbike does a necessary mode of travel for those want to get a good look at these prehistoric caves. In many cases, tourists need to stop and ask locals exactly how to find the best caves in the area to explore but, visiting some of these caves is well worth the effort.
For those who enjoy a bit of opulence a visit to the Tirtha Wedding chapel is in order. Designed by architect Glen Parker and sitting on the cliff top of Nyang Nyang beach this chapel is a series of glass walled triangle pavilions surrounded by reflection pools.
